Janet Gesme
Janet Gesme, Courante from Bach Cello Suite No. 1
Text from chapter three of Martin Schleske's "The Sound of Life's Unspeakable Beauty," read by Michael Gesme. Accompanied by music played on a cello by Edward Geesman.
When I started releasing this series, my friend and chiropractor, Liz, said: "You have a gift. I know you already know this." This shocked me deeply, because I do not feel like I have a gift, not for playing cello, and not for translating! A love for both, yes, but I do not feel like I have any special talent.
To me, the real gift is that God wants each one of us to let our light shine, no matter how big or small or how perfect or imperfect: The only gift I have is to be vulnerable in front of other people. I know that many classical musicians will be horrified by my videos: by my problems with intonation, lack of production and mixing, but if a few people find encouragement, it is worth it. In fact, the very musicians that can hear all my mistakes may be encouraged, because they know they can do better, so they can get out there and be confident!
Ironically, it was harder for me to accept my own shortcomings for this video than for any of the others. Releasing it was a "practice what you preach" moment. Ouch.
I am grateful for friends, colleagues and family who stand by my side and encourage me to be real. Thank you!
